Tesla plans to buy Mercedes Benz

There are three reasons I can think of: 1) skilled employees with 2) already setup manufacturing facilities that are approved and 3) some prestige and heritage

2021 Global Crypto Mining exceeds U.S. EV energy needs

on 1). I don't disagree with the premise that energy is abundant. The problem with "free energy" is the constraint of the definition of "free". For example: If I don't pay for energy is it free? Or what if I have access to energy without any effort on my part, is it then free energy or even...

2021 Global Crypto Mining exceeds U.S. EV energy needs

Technically lots of crypto mining is a energy to currency converter. A while back I considered that opportunity being already completely renewable off-grid with excess power, but just didn't like the volatility or the lack of independent control of the coins at the time, that were also...

GM’s Mary Barra Says GM can Catch Tesla by 2025. Problem is…

She's not on crack she's on ICE. And don't knock Nikola it had sci-fi tech that harvested the energy of the planet...gravity. :-p

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Once you do the battery heat pump costs you realise just how good hydronic thermal mass storage is in price comparison. :-) But either way, regardless of storage type, the argument originally was around network and generation capacity rise because of EV uptake and the reduction in use of...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

I interpret that as; two EVs in one household, household electricity consumption doubles. And if heating comes from electricity too (probably heat pump) for a house, then three times the electricity consumption per household. ;-) That was specifically for household consumption, not commercial...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

If only Tesla installs Megapacks we'll never get one and without that no SC either unless we get V2X. Most of the time the manufacturers only get to come in for milestone check or commissioning before it goes online, and don't do the actual install. Thats normally subbed out. I know my town...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

A megapack setup will probably cost more than our whole grid does. It's only 25km accross with one main feeder, and most of which is single phase overhead power. BTW who's "they"? You know I'm not in the USA right, and not everywhere is the same? Dunno what you mean "screws up peak supply vs...

Elon Musk says the chip shortage is a ‘short-term’ problem

Um wafer production shortage not chips. Theres heaps of chip manufacturers but not many wafer manufacturers hence the bottleneck. Wafer manufacturers sell to chip manufacturers. Technically "chips" are really "IC" aka integrated circuits that route out physical connections to the outside world...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Both. So the SIPS has EPS foam in between to layers of steel and then inside that we have hemp insulation. The reasoning is that hemp is a active insulator that also stabilizes humidity, which is a factor in sealed building envelopes that use forced heat recovery ventilation.

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Time if use is my primary concern, because network only use a small proportion of what they can because they have to be able to supply peak power. I agree with that, but centralized generation or storage does not help reduce peak or improve network utilisation. And time of use "peak" power is...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Are you trying to call me a poor aussie outback beggar because I don't use enough power? :-p I agree with your premise. Average household energy consumption doesn't reflect heat load accurate enough, that is unavoidable in colder climates. It also doesn’t provide insight into house size or...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Not sure what you mean. What exactly doesn't work like that? Tell me how it works then. Where did I mix it up? And even if I did that doesn't negate the rest of my argument. I am not trying to insult anyone here, just setting the record straight as to how to apply a little bit of logic and...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

That's good for your own independent use. And as we know your household consumption is above the norm, and nearly some 4x as much as mine (for some reason ). ? Accordingly, the comparison would only make sense if compared to a "normal" US household consumption. For example your 361W equals...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

For clarity regarding my comments on "EV tidal wave coming". This will ultimately be limited by grid capacity in the first instance. As is availability of fuel for ICE cars that is limited by fuel distribution by trucks, and the lack of drivers in the UK. Something will need to change to...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

No because I have wasted hours of thread writing on people who have no engineering competence, nor can argue technical issues without making political statements and FUD. I do not wish to be sucked into an political argument that has nothing to do with how physics works. Politics is a bias...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

As above... Not interested in your argument because its not the same as mine, so I'll be politely not reading your comments. Already shut 3 threads because of this problem. 8-)

Don't let your bias fool you. Learn to understand what I am writing, not what you "think" I'm trying to say.

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

Grids are on the decline in our neck of the woods. Don't make financial or engineering sense so they are being actively dismantled by our state run utility. People will opt to charge EVs at home or work direct from solar without a grid being required simply because its cheaper with solar being...

EV sales have doubled. Is a ‘tidal wave’ coming?

You just need to do some energy numbers to see how much energy cars use in comparison to at home energy use. You will need more fossils if you use the grid and you will have to seriously upgrade the grid too. Our grid is at least 70% renewable energy already but it can't handle a single super...
